The Urban Community Initiative
URBAN is one of four COMMUNITY INITIATIVES within the EU Structural Funds.
In present-day Europe many substantial problems – social, economic, environmental – have arisen mainly in urban centres. Approximately 80% of Europeans live in cities. This makes the European Union the most urbanized area in the world.
Recognising that more attention must be paid at Community level to the problems of cities, the European Commission has taken up the URBAN Community initiative with regard to the economic and social revitalisation of towns and settlements in crisis, so as to promote sustainable urban development.
